Some of my very first big band charts

This arrangement of “How High the Moon” was my VERY FIRST big band arrangement!

This was my second big band chart. Professor Etienne Charles had me bring in a new chart for each concert during my last year at MSU, and I had the honor of having Harvey Mason perform on this.

This was my first unhinged big band arrangement. The first few versions had WAAAAY too many notes.

Professor Rodney Whitaker asked me to write this in January 2018 during my last year at MSU. This was my first arrangement I did with lots of instruction - he asked me to stick close to the original, allowing me a short section in there to do whatever I wanted.

I did a few charts for the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra during the first few months after I graduated. This was one of my favorites I did of those, featuring my great friend Markus Howell on alto sax.

Professor Rodney Whitaker asked me to do six arrangements of songs by or made famous by Miles Davis. This Wayne Shorter tune was one of the first big band charts I wrote where I got to explore thinking about storytelling in my arrangement - I was inspired by Star Trek Deep Space Nine episodes for this one.

Livestream shows

The notes below the song are just for noting any problems in the sound - as I get more and more of these, I don’t want you to listen to one that has problems if you don’t want to! You still may enjoy them, but you’ve been warned, and I’ve hopefully learned something from it.

My computer almost fell part way through 🤦‍♂️ so sorry for the weird skip

I had a few interruptions on this one, so it skips a couple times to trim them out. Plus didn’t realize my camera was getting lower (first skip was because it fell!)

I accidentally bumped the mic with my bari (it's big apparently!) and my stand tipped over a bit at one point. Nothing major, but those could be surprising sounds or sights if you're not expecting it!

I messed up the sound on the Star Trek piece, so you won’t hear any saxophone, just the backing track… whoops!

The balance was way off on some of the ones with backing tracks, so it’s hard to hear my saxophone playing

I messed up and had the saxophone cut out during the last song with the backing track

 MSU Senior Recital ‘18

For my senior recital at Michigan State, I performed eight songs - four as a quartet and four as an octet. Half the songs are arrangements and half are originals. These were some of my first songs I arranged or wrote, so they’re no longer available publicly. Some I still play now and have reworked them quite a bit. And, I play bari on ALL of these!

Original Performance of "This is Our Environment"

This was the very first performance of my project “This is Our Environment.” I wrote most of this music during the summer and fall of 2017, workshopping a lot of it with my sextet during the 2017-2018 school year. All of these songs except “Fauntroy” ended up on the album, except most of them ended up being edited, ranging from some simple edits to major overhauls. I had a few local Lansing-area spoken word artists on this show, which you can hear on the full concert video, which is first. We were fortunate enough to be able to perform this at the MSU Natural History Museum.
